I’ve been following along with the New Book of the Bible feed for some time now. It’s a good idea that works for different reasons. One of the main reasons I believe it works is because it’s actually funny. That sounds on the nose, but with all of the white noise on Twitter and elsewhere, genuinely good content usually rises to the top. This feed is no exception.
Another reason it works its because it takes two things (most) people know about and mashes them together. Parody accounts thrive on an idea like this. Modern Seinfeld does the same thing. It’s taken a common, albeit not pop culture friendly tome in the Bible and mashes it with the modern-day superduperstar that is Justin Bieber. Making fun of things is a huge foundation on which Twitter was built. If you can make fun of two huge things at once? Paydirt.
The only real critique I have of the “Book of Bieb” is the name. I think the “Book of Justin” sounds more biblical. I could even be talked into the “Book of Bieber” more so than “Book of Bieb”. It could be personal preference, but it just doesn’t quite bring the air of authenticity that one of the other names would to me. The “Book of Bieb” sounds like a fanzine but turns out to be hilarious ribbing. Whereas the “Book of Justin” sounds really official and stuffy but ends up being a silly parody. I suppose it depends on how you want to arrive at that conclusion.
